Day Trips from Zadar
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
35–40 USD (fuel or bus + park entry)Sixteen turquoise lakes tumble through moss-grown travertine dams; timber walkways let you hover centimetres above the surface. Morning light paints the water the hue of weathered copper, and the scent of crushed pine needles rises from the boards.
Kornati Islands boat cruise
55–60 USD (includes lunch and park fees)White karst walls plummet into sapphire water; the engine dies and you hear only cicadas and waves slapping limestone. Day boats serve grilled fish on deck, so rosemary smoke drifts across the anchorage.
Krka National Park & Šibenik old town
30–35 USD (transport + park entry)Skradinski Buk’s stepped falls thunder louder than you expect; shut your eyes and cool mist kisses your cheeks. Later, Šibenik’s cathedral of white Dalmatian stone glows amber in the fading light.
Paklenica National Park hiking
20–25 USD (fuel or bus + park entry)Pine resin thickens the air as you climb between rust-streaked karst walls. Scree crunches under boots and the odd whistle of a griffon slices the sky—this is eagle country.
Pag Island cheese, salt & parties
25–30 USD (transport + tastings)The causeway gives you front-row seats to turquoise shallows; once on Pag, the wind carries the sharp tang of sheep’s-milk cheese aging in stone huts. After dark, Zrće’s bass thumps across the bay.
Dugi Otok (Sali & Telašćica)
30–35 USD (ferry + park entry + bike rental)Dugi Otok feels like the Adriatic before anyone mailed a postcard—quiet coves where turquoise water snaps against chalk cliffs. In Telašćica Nature Park wild rosemary mixes with iodine drifting off the salt lake.
Zrmanja River kayaking
50–55 USD (all-inclusive day trip)The river cuts a rust-red limestone canyon; paddling beneath leaning pines you hear only drip of paddle, cry of falcons. The water is so clear trout shadows stripe the sand.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Nin salt works and historic core
15–20 USD (bus + museum entry)Tiny Nin’s salt pans blush pink at sunrise; you taste brine on the breeze while stilts stalk the shallows. The old town fits inside fifteen minutes of wandering.
Ugljan Island cycling loop
20–25 USD (ferry + bike + lunch)Pedal past fig orchards and fishermen mending nets; every bend frames another postcard of Zadar’s bell towers shrinking across the water.
Zadar Archipelago sunset sail
30–35 USD (includes drinks)As the sun slips behind the islands, the wooden mast creaks and the sea turns molten copper. The skipper pours local maraschino into thimble glasses.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- Morning ferries and catamarans sell out in July–August—book online the night before.
- Bring cash for island taverns; card terminals fail when the generator hiccups.
- Highway tolls accept euros or cards, but smaller park entrances want kunas—keep a 200-kuna note handy.
- Most day cruises include lunch; if you’re vegetarian, email when booking—grilled fish is the default.
- Paklenica and Krka close trails after heavy rain; check park Facebook pages at 7 a.m.
- Parking in Šibenik’s old town is impossible after 10 a.m.—use the bus station garage and walk ten minutes.
- Swimming is banned at Plitvice but allowed below Skradinski Buk—pack a quick-dry towel for Krka day trips.
